AKD overtakes Sirisena in legislative output after slower start, Verité finds 03.06.2026

Verité Research has found that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's administration has enacted more laws in its first 18 months than former President Maithripala Sirisena's did during a comparable period, despite a slower start. While Sirisena's administration initially moved faster, enacting more bills in the first six months, Dissanayake's administration accelerated its legislative efforts. By the 18-month mark, the Dissanayake administration had passed 32 laws, surpassing Sirisena's 20, though Sirisena’s administration gazetted more bills overall. Both presidencies served periods following elections where voters sought reform, with Dissanayake’s legislative success showing a higher conversion rate of gazetted bills into enacted laws.
