Alaeddin uit Syrië vluchtte voor de oorlog naar Nederland, nu is hij terug: 'Nu voel ik me hier een vreemde' 09.06.2026

Alaeddin Janid, who fled the war in Syria for the Netherlands eight years ago, has returned to his home country following the fall of the Assad regime. Despite the regime's collapse, Syria remains devastated, with 60% destruction, loss of family and friends, and a continued need for humanitarian aid for 16.5 million people. Alaeddin experiences a profound sense of displacement, feeling like a stranger in Syria and more "Dutch" than he ever did in Europe, even listening to Dutch music. He sought closure and peace, visiting his mother's grave in Aleppo, an emotional experience that highlighted the unresolved grief from his time fleeing. This feeling of being a traveler has fundamentally altered his identity, leaving him feeling rootless globally. Meanwhile, hundreds of Americans are emigrating to the Netherlands, citing dissatisfaction with Donald Trump's policies and governance as their primary motivation, seeking a better future in Europe.
