Albanese seeks Pacific pact after condemning ‘provocative’ China missile launch 07.07.2026

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is seeking to strengthen Pacific security through new treaties following China's provocative intercontinental ballistic missile launch. On Monday, China fired a long-range missile from a submarine, which passed over the Philippines and landed near Nauru, providing only two hours' notice to Australia. Albanese, alongside leaders from Papua New Guinea, Tonga, and Samoa, condemned the act as a destabilizing and unfriendly gesture that violates international testing standards. In response to this regional instability, Albanese will host several Pacific leaders in Brisbane to discuss regional integration and the "Ocean of Peace" military alliance. While the Solomon Islands maintains a security pact with China, Prime Minister Matthew Wale expressed that such actions are not what a friend does, emphasizing the urgent need for a Pacific-wide security platform to ensure regional stability.
