Albanese seeks Pacific pact after condemning ‘provocative’ China missile launch 07.07.2026

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is spearheading efforts to strengthen regional security by seeking a new Pacific treaty. This diplomatic push follows a joint condemnation by Albanese and several Asia-Pacific leaders regarding China's recent intercontinental ballistic missile launch. The leaders characterized the missile test as a provocative, threatening, and unfriendly act conducted without providing sufficient prior notice. To advance this regional pact, Albanese will host Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape, Tongan Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua, and Samoan Prime Minister Laʻauli Leuatea Schmidt in Brisbane this Wednesday. Following a series of strategic bilateral meetings to discuss regional stability, the leaders are scheduled to attend the State of Origin decider. This diplomatic movement highlights growing tensions in the Indo-Pacific region and the urgent need for coordinated security frameworks among Pacific Island nations and Australia.
