Allegations over learner racial profiling in the Western Cape: Education MEC responds 08.06.2026

Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier has strongly refuted claims of racial profiling in learner admissions, describing a parliamentary committee meeting as a "complete shambles." The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education expressed "serious concern" over the Western Cape Education Department's (WCED) failure to provide requested information on admissions and placement practices, particularly in light of a Western Cape High Court judgment highlighting discriminatory practices. The committee criticized the WCED's reliance on the sub judice rule to avoid engagement, asserting that parliamentary oversight continues regardless of ongoing litigation. Maynier argued the committee deliberately misled the public about an "investigation" into racial profiling, stating it was a monitoring exercise conducted across all provinces. He also noted the WCED has been granted leave to appeal the aforementioned court judgment, which he contends was not unanimous and is currently suspended.
