Austria and neighboring regions are grappling with severe snowfall and high avalanche risk, leading to multiple fatalities and widespread disruptions. As of February 22nd, the highest avalanche warning level (5) is in effect for parts of Tyrol, South Tyrol, and Trentino, with level 4 in much of Tyrol, Switzerland, and Northern Italy. The country has already recorded 18 avalanche deaths this season, nearing the annual average. A 21-year-old Slovakian died in Styria after being buried by an avalanche, and a 41-year-old Austrian succumbed to injuries from a separate avalanche incident in Tyrol. A bus carrying twelve passengers was caught in a snow slide but miraculously, no one was injured. The severe weather has also caused power outages, with thousands of households in Slovenia and Styria affected, and significant transport disruptions, including temporary airport closures and highway blockages.
