Alpen-Schneewalze in Österreich: Bus entgeht Katastrophe nur knapp – Sportler erliegt Verletzungen 21.02.2026

Intense snowfall and high avalanche danger have gripped the Austrian Alps, leading to multiple fatalities and significant disruptions. On February 21st, a bus carrying twelve passengers was swept away by an avalanche in the Austrian Alps, but all occupants were safely evacuated by the driver, narrowly avoiding a potentially catastrophic outcome. Tragically, a 41-year-old skier, caught in a separate avalanche in Serfaus, Tirol, succumbed to his injuries in the hospital after being rescued from a depth of two and a half meters. The Austrian Bundesheer was deployed for reconnaissance and transport, while Bavaria also braced for further snowfall with considerable avalanche risk. In the High Tatras, a missing tourist was found deceased, marking the fourth avalanche fatality in the region over two weeks. Austria has recorded 18 avalanche deaths this season, nearing the typical annual average.
