Amazon will stop accepting new customers for Mechanical Turk 20h ago

Amazon Web Services has announced that its crowdsourcing marketplace, Mechanical Turk, will stop accepting new customers starting July 30, 2026. While existing users may continue utilizing the platform, Amazon stated it will not introduce new features, focusing instead on maintaining security and availability. Launched in 2005, the service allows workers to perform simple, manual tasks like CAPTCHA completion or sentiment analysis. The platform has historically been central to debates regarding crowdsourced labor ethics and data annotation for AI training via SageMaker. However, the service faces modern challenges, including a 2023 finding that up to 46% of workers use large language models to complete tasks. This shift toward AI-driven labor raises significant questions regarding data reliability and the future necessity of human intervention within the crowdsourcing ecosystem as the platform enters this transitional phase.
