American Airlines hikes bag fees as airlines face rising costs 09.04.2026

American Airlines has become the fifth major U.S. carrier to increase checked bag fees, effective April 9, 2024, for tickets booked on or after this date for domestic and short-haul international flights. This move, attributed to rising jet fuel costs exacerbated by the war in Iran, mirrors similar price hikes by JetBlue, Delta, Southwest, and United. The airline is raising prices for the first and second checked bags by $10, with the first bag costing $45 prepaid and $50 at the airport, and the second bag costing $55 prepaid and $60 at the airport. Additionally, basic economy fares will see higher baggage costs and new restrictions, including seat selection fees and ineligibility for upgrades, starting May 18, 2024.
