Amsterdam bans advertising for meat and fossil fuels in public places 05.05.2026

Amsterdam has implemented a ban on public advertisements for meat and fossil fuel products, effective May 1, becoming the first capital city worldwide to enact such a measure. Initiated by the GreenLeft and Party for the Animals, the ban targets items like beef, chicken, pork, fish, gasoline cars, airlines, cruises, and faraway holidays to discourage consumption linked to high carbon emissions. City councillor Anneke Veenhoff stated that renting public space to these ads contradicts climate policies. While Haarlem and The Hague in the Netherlands have similar bans, over 50 cities globally are adopting such measures. Opposition from groups like the Dutch Advertisers' Association argues that bans infringe on commercial freedom and expression, as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for fossil fuel ad bans in June 2024 to combat climate change.
