ANC women rally behind Mbali Shinga in her fight for political rights against NFP's expulsion 04.06.2026

Former KwaZulu-Natal National Freedom Party (NFP) chairperson Mbali Shinga has taken the KZN Legislature to the Pietermaritzburg High Court to interdict the swearing-in of her replacement, challenging her recent expulsion from the party. Shinga's application aims to prevent Speaker Nontembeko Boyce from appointing another MPL to replace her after she was expelled for defying instructions to resign as MEC and refusing to vote in favor of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party's motion of no confidence. ANC MPL Fikile Masika voiced support for Shinga, framing her struggle as a broader fight for women's political rights. The NFP caucus manager, Innocent Shezi, stated that Shinga's expulsion was procedurally unfair and had not been formally communicated. NFP President Ivan Barnes indicated that internal matters were concluded but invited opponents to pursue legal reviews.
