Google is enhancing Android phone security by introducing a feature to detect spoofed calls and impersonation scams, a growing threat amplified by advancements in AI voice cloning. This new functionality, expected to be available on devices running Android 12 and above, will work by identifying calls that mimic the voices of contacts. The Federal Trade Commission reported nearly $3 billion in losses from such scams in 2024, highlighting the increasing sophistication of fraudsters who exploit the realism of AI-generated voices to solicit urgent financial aid. To utilize this protection, users will need to have the Phone by Google, Contacts, and Google Messages apps installed on their devices.
