Anthropic’s India expansion collides with a local company that already had the name 09.02.2026

As artificial intelligence firm Anthropic expands its operations into India, a local software company also named Anthropic has filed a complaint in a Karnataka commercial court, alleging prior use of the name since 2017 and seeking damages of ₹10 million (approximately $110,000) due to customer confusion. This legal challenge arises as Anthropic deepens its commitment to the Indian market, having announced an India office in October and appointed Irina Ghose, former Microsoft India managing director, to lead its operations. The Indian company's founder stated the action is to ensure clarity and recognition of their established presence, not to seek confrontation. The court has issued notice and summons to Anthropic but declined an interim injunction, with the matter scheduled for a return date of February 16.
