Tara Livingston, a 56-year-old Canadian woman, has been living with the invisible consequences of a stroke that occurred on November 8, 2023. Initially, she developed aphasia, hindering her ability to hold fluid conversations and forcing her to leave her job as a divorce mediator. In February 2024, following a seemingly routine surgery, Livingston awoke to discover she had developed a Russian accent, a rare but documented neurological condition known as Foreign Accent Syndrome, caused by brain damage affecting speech. Despite undergoing speech therapy to regain her original accent, she feels a profound loss of identity and expresses a desire to reclaim her former voice.
