During a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan clarified that Armenia has no plans to leave the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and has not notified its partners of any such intention. He stated that Armenia’s legal team found no violations against Russia or the EAEU, as the union’s charter only requires a six-month advance notice for withdrawal, which Armenia has not given. Pashinyan also addressed the EAEU’s suggestion to hold a referendum on EU membership, explaining that by passing a specific law, Armenia has effectively abandoned the idea of a referendum. He argued that if the National Assembly had not adopted the law, civil society would have gathered 350,000 signatures, forcing a vote. Pashinyan emphasized that the issue is not yet mature enough to be presented to the Armenian people. He reassured Putin that the process is not directed against Russia or the EAEU, and that Armenia highly values its relationship with Russia, expressing hope that Russia feels the same. Pashinyan thanked Putin for his understanding and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to maintaining strong bilateral ties.
