Armenian monastery pilgrimage cancelled at last minute 07.05.2026

A planned annual Armenian pilgrimage to the Sourp Magar monastery in Kyrenia, which had been suspended for years, was abruptly cancelled by Turkish Cypriot authorities. The Armenian Cypriot community had received confirmation for the pilgrimage on the Saturday before it was scheduled for Sunday, prompting them to organize buses and announce the event, with around 60-70 people registering. However, on Monday, the authorities cited a "clerical error" as the reason for revoking permission. Turkish Cypriot ‘foreign minister’ Tahsin Ertugruloglu stated the cancellation was due to the monastery's derelict "physical state," adding that an alternative church would be suggested for future pilgrimages. This cancellation is a significant setback for the community, especially as efforts to renovate the monastery were progressing with provided funding.
