Arnaque au faux "Brad Pitt" : les banques doivent-elles rembourser les victimes de ces escroqueries aux sentiments ? 23.02.2026

A 53-year-old interior designer, Anne, is suing her banks for failing to prevent her from losing €830,000 to a romance scammer posing as Brad Pitt. The scammer used AI-modified photos and fabricated medical emergencies to solicit funds. Anne's lawsuit, filed on February 12th, hinges on the transaction descriptions, such as "William Bradley Pitt's kidney transplant at Mayo Clinic Dr Hatem," which she argues should have alerted her bank. Legal expert Jérôme Lasserre Capdeville notes that while banks have a duty of vigilance, particularly against money laundering or apparent anomalies, current jurisprudence suggests that large, rapid payments to foreign accounts alone may not constitute an "apparent anomaly." The chances of Anne recovering her money are considered close to zero, as legal precedent for such cases is scarce, and the Cour de Cassation has yet to rule on similar situations.
