Artemis II broke Fred Haise’s distance record, but he is happy to pass it on 25.04.2026

The Artemis II mission has established a new record for the farthest humans have traveled from Earth, reaching 252,756 miles (406,771 kilometers) during its circumlunar flight. This achievement surpasses the previous record of 248,655 miles (400,171 kilometers) set by the Apollo 13 crew in April 1970. Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise, who was part of that record-setting mission, expressed his happiness in passing the distinction to the Artemis II crew. The Artemis II astronauts, whose ages range from their 40s to 50s, flew further from the Moon than any previous Apollo mission. This new milestone precedes the anticipated return of astronauts to the lunar surface in the coming years, ensuring that the experience of visiting the Moon remains within living memory.
