New research published in Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan presents compelling evidence that the mysterious "Little Red Dots" (LRDs) discovered by the James Webb Space Telescope are early-stage supermassive black holes undergoing mergers. Led by graduate student Takumi Tanaka from the University of Tokyo, the study identified four dual LRD candidates in the COSMOS-Web survey with projected separations of 0.2 to 1.2 arcseconds. Spectroscopic analysis confirmed two pairs at redshifts of 5.822 and 5.464, corresponding to physical separations of 1.64 and 7.36 kiloparsecs (approximately 5,300 and 24,000 light-years).
