Asylum centers: Must have the right of veto 07.07.2026

This debate article criticizes current practices where the state, through the Directorate of Immigration (UDI), can establish asylum centers in municipalities without local elected officials having a real right of veto. The author argues that this violates the principles of local democracy and local self-governance, as municipalities are often overridden by central decisions. The establishment of asylum centers entails significant challenges for municipal services such as health, schools, child welfare, and interpretation services. A critical problem is that municipalities do not receive full coverage for all documented additional costs, which leads to the weakening of budgets for other important welfare services. The Progress Party therefore proposes that municipal councils must be granted a real right of veto regarding such establishments. The article concludes that the state must respect local decisions and ensure full financial coverage to safeguard both the capacity of the local community and the citizens' trust in local self-governance.
