At least 11 killed in Pakistan-administered Kashmir clashes before rally 08.06.2026

In Pakistan-administered Kashmir, at least 11 individuals, including four police officers and six protesters, were killed and dozens more injured in clashes that erupted on Sunday, June 8, 2024. The violence preceded a planned protest by the outlawed Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) on June 9, concerning political rights and legislative representation. The clashes intensified after the Supreme Court of Pakistan-administered Kashmir upheld 12 legislative seats for Kashmiri refugees, which the JAAC sought to abolish due to perceived disproportionate influence. Police reported that JAAC supporters initiated the violence by firing on security forces in Rawalakot, leading to a forceful response that dispersed the protesters and restored order, though the JAAC accused the state of a "massacre." Authorities have also designated the JAAC as a proscribed group under an anti-terror law.
