At least 24 soldiers killed in suspected Boko Haram attack in Chad 05.05.2026

Chadian armed forces reported that at least 24 soldiers were killed and 46 wounded in an overnight attack by Boko Haram militants on the Barka Tolorom army base in the Lake Chad region late Monday. The area, which straddles multiple countries and contains islands used as refuges by militants, has long been threatened by the Nigeria-based group. Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby offered condolences on Facebook and vowed to continue fighting with "renewed determination" until militant threats are eradicated. This assault follows a significant October 2024 attack that killed around 40 Chadian soldiers, after which Déby launched a personal counter-offensive that concluded in February 2025 with the army claiming Boko Haram had "no more sanctuary" in Chad.
