At least 32 killed after crane falls on train in Thailand’s north-east 14.01.2026

On January 14, 2026, at least 32 people were killed and 66 injured when a construction crane collapsed onto two carriages of a passenger train in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, Thailand. The train, en route to Ubon Ratchathani province with 195 passengers, derailed and briefly caught fire after being struck by the crane, which was part of a high-speed rail project being built above the existing line. Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn ordered a thorough investigation into the incident, with caretaker Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul emphasizing the need for compensation and legal action against those responsible. Engineering consultant Theerachote Rujiviphat identified Italian-Thai Development as the sole contractor responsible for the crane's collapse, noting the company's involvement in previous accidents.
