At least 35 dead after major earthquake strikes southern Philippines 08.06.2026

A powerful magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao island in the southern Philippines on Monday at 07:37 local time, resulting in at least 32 deaths and over 100 injuries. The tremor triggered tsunami alerts across the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, and Australia, though some were later cancelled. Significant damage has been reported, including collapsed buildings like a Jollibee restaurant and landslides. Authorities have evacuated approximately 10,000 residents and are working to verify casualty numbers, with the coastal province of Sarangani reporting 17 fatalities and General Santos recording 10 deaths. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered a coordinated disaster response and suspended classes in affected areas due to the quake's impact, which occurred on the first day of the school year. Over 130 aftershocks have been recorded, highlighting the Philippines' location on the seismically active "ring of fire."
