Attack in South Sudan's Ruweng area death toll rises to 169 02.03.2026

A violent attack by unidentified men in Abiemnhom, Ruweng Administrative Area, South Sudan, on Sunday, March 2, has resulted in a death toll of 169, an increase from the initial estimate of 122. Information Minister James Monyluak Majok reported that 90 of the deceased were civilians and 79 were government soldiers, with the possibility of the toll rising due to missing individuals who fled into the bush. The attackers are believed to be youth from Mayom County in neighboring Unity State, and their intentions remain unknown. This incident underscores growing instability in South Sudan, exacerbated by political infighting that threatens the 2018 peace deal, and follows concerns raised by the United Nations regarding deepening instability since the arrest of former First Vice President Riek Machar a year ago.
