Au lendemain de la mort d’El Mencho, des dizaines de morts et un vent de panique au Mexique 23.02.2026

Following the military operation that killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias "El Mencho," the leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), on Sunday, February 23, 2026, Mexico experienced widespread violence. The government announced on Monday, February 24, 2026, that nearly sixty individuals, including at least 25 members of the National Guard, a security agent, and a prosecutor's office official, were killed in attacks by the CJNG. In retaliation, 30 cartel members were also killed by law enforcement in Jalisco state. The violence prompted the deployment of an additional 2,500 soldiers to western Mexico, with thousands already stationed there, to deter further unrest. President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that road blockades had been lifted and assured the public of the country's peace, though businesses remained closed and schools suspended classes in several states due to fear. International advisories were issued for American, Canadian, British, and Australian citizens to exercise caution or seek shelter in affected regions, leading to flight cancellations.
