Audit Reports: Court of Audit Criticizes Chambers of Commerce 07.07.2026

The Austrian Court of Audit has identified massive deficiencies within the Austrian Economic Chamber (WKO) in audit reports covering the period from 2020 to 2024. Criticisms were particularly directed at the opaque management of reserves, which amount to approximately 2.6 billion euros, as well as the high salaries of top officials. The Court of Audit also cited a lack of personnel controlling, which led to an increase in personnel expenses to 511 million euros. Salary increases for officials between 21 and 65 percent, as well as above-average management salaries compared to federal ministries, were criticized. The WKO responded to the devastating results by stating that the points of criticism should be incorporated into ongoing reform processes. Plans include, among other things, the elimination of 200 positions and a standardization of financial statements and reserve reporting by 2027, in order to make the complex organizational structure more clear and transparent.
