Many drivers fail to accelerate sufficiently, often attempting to merge at 60 km/h into 120 km/h traffic, increasing collision risks. The ADAC emphasizes reaching the speed of flowing traffic. A second mistake is assuming right-of-way; § 18 Abs. 3 StVO clarifies that ongoing Autobahn traffic always has priority, not requiring drivers to yield. Drivers must stop at the end of the lane if no safe gap exists. Thirdly, neglecting safe distance on the acceleration lane can lead to rear-end collisions if the vehicle ahead brakes. The ADAC advises using the full lane length and, in emergencies, using the hard shoulder if no gap appears, despite it being generally prohibited.
