Aussie state pushing landmark laws to allow cannabis smokers behind the wheel 03.06.2026

New South Wales is proposing landmark legislation that could allow over 300,000 medicinal cannabis users to drive, a first for any Australian state. Under the proposed rules, individuals with a prescription for THC-containing medicinal cannabis, holding a full driver's license, would be permitted to drive if they pass an online safety program and adhere to a maximum THC threshold. This initiative aims to accommodate the growing number of medicinal cannabis users, with NSW Premier Chris Minns emphasizing it as life-changing medication. The government is also introducing a three-strike system for positive roadside tests, involving warnings, fines, and license suspensions for repeat offenders, while prioritizing road safety and distinguishing impaired driving from compliant medicinal use.
