Three Australian women linked to the Islamic State (IS) and their children have returned to Australia from Syria, with two arrested upon arrival at Melbourne Airport and one, Janai Safar, at Sydney Airport. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) confirmed that Safar, a 32-year-old former student who travelled to Syria in 2015, will face charges including enslavement. A 53-year-old woman from Victoria will face four charges related to enslavement and slave trading, while a 31-year-old Victorian woman will face charges of enslavement and using a slave. Assistant Commissioner Stephen Nutt of the AFP stated that community safety is the top priority but provided limited details on the specific charges or the safety plans for the children involved. The arrivals were met with a significant media presence and a group of individuals, prompting a police escort from both airports.
