Janai Safar, a 32-year-old former health science student, has returned to Sydney with her nine-year-old son after leaving Australia for Islamic State-occupied Syria in 2015. Safar, who was married to an IS fighter believed to have died in 2017, had previously stated in 2019 that she would not return to Australia due to fears of arrest and concerns about her son's upbringing in a non-Islamic country. At that time, her father described her as "stubborn" but believed she wanted to return. The family had been residing in the al-Roj refugee camp in northeastern Syria, close to the Iraqi border.
