Starlink, a satellite internet system operated by Elon Musk's SpaceX, has become a critical tool for Ukraine's defense since 2022, providing essential communication and reconnaissance capabilities independent of vulnerable traditional infrastructure. While Ukraine possesses over 40,000 terminals, Russia, officially banned from using Starlink, has been smuggling terminals through third countries since 2023, leveraging them for effective drone attacks and deep strikes into Ukrainian territory, contributing to Russian territorial gains. Following international pressure, including from Poland's Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, SpaceX implemented measures to restrict Russian use, such as speed limitations and mandatory terminal registration in Ukraine. These restrictions have reportedly led to significant Ukrainian territorial recaptures, with Russia exploring alternative communication methods like fiber-optic drones and a new stratospheric platform, though its effectiveness is questioned.
