Airbus's hydrogen-powered aircraft project, ZEROe, is facing significant delays, with commercial viability now projected for the latter half of the 21st century, a timeline optimistic compared to some industry estimates. Despite these setbacks and a global geopolitical context that has shifted environmental priorities, Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury remains confident in hydrogen's potential for aviation decarbonization. The project involves four 2-megawatt electric motors powered by fuel cells, utilizing liquid hydrogen stored at -253°C. While ground testing was previously slated for 2027 in Munich, these milestones are likely to be postponed due to the accumulated delays.
