Azerbaijan sheds light on large-scale investments in upgrading its power grid 02.06.2026

Azerbaijan is undertaking a significant power grid modernization initiative, with Deputy Energy Minister Elnur Soltanov announcing an investment exceeding $500 million. This substantial financial commitment aims to integrate an additional 2 gigawatts of capacity into the national energy system by 2027. Soltanov highlighted that the country's relatively small energy network and limited international interconnections present challenges for large-scale renewable energy integration, as smaller systems struggle more with the variability of renewable sources compared to larger ones. However, the growing demand for electricity driven by advancements in artificial intelligence and the development of data centers presents new opportunities for expanding energy generation, particularly in renewable projects. The modernization effort is crucial to ensure a stable and uninterrupted power supply required by these burgeoning technologies.
