ENTRETIEN. Baisse de la natalité : vers un "cataclysme" dans 10 ans en France ? L’économiste Maxime Sbaihi craint "un retournement historique" 18.02.2026

Many French women are seeking fertility treatments in Barcelona due to more liberal laws and shorter waiting lists compared to France. The Eugin clinic in Barcelona, a European hub for fertility, offers egg freezing and IVF services, with a significant portion of its clientele being French. Cécile Guéry Riquier, 45, is undergoing IVF in Barcelona after freezing her eggs in 2018, as French doctors advised against waiting due to her age and long queues. While Spain's PMA (assisted reproductive technology) is accessible to all women regardless of age or marital status since 2006, France only opened it to single women in 2021 with an age limit of 43 and a 37-year limit for egg freezing. The cost for Cécile's treatment was €2,500 for freezing, plus annual storage fees and approximately €6,000 for IVF, with partial reimbursement from social security. Experts suggest France could benefit from Spain's approach to improve access for women over 40, a demographic showing increasing birth rates.
