Bakersfield, California hostage standoff ends after FBI kills armed sex offender 03.06.2026

A nearly 16-hour standoff at a downtown Bakersfield, California, bank building concluded Wednesday when FBI agents fatally shot Anthony Scott Searles-Harris, 41, a registered sex offender and former U.S. Army soldier. Searles-Harris had barricaded himself on the second floor of the Chase Bank building on June 2, 2026, and held at least five hostages, claiming to have explosives attached to himself and some of the hostages. The FBI confirmed multiple improvised explosive devices were involved. All ten hostages were unharmed and safely recovered by FBI SWAT teams who breached the building around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. Searles-Harris, who served in the Army from 2006-2007 and had a criminal history including sex offenses, was pronounced dead at the scene.
