The Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) is bracing for significant fallout as leaders gather in Palau, with fractures emerging over China's influence in the region. Kiribati President Taneti Maamau has pulled out of the meeting, sending Director of Foreign Service David Teaabo—who served as ambassador to China until May—instead. This highly unusual move deprives the forum of a key leader's participation in the critical leaders' retreat, where frank discussions and relationship-building typically occur.
