Basisschoolleerlingen lezen en rekenen steeds beter, lerarentekort neemt voor tweede jaar af 08.04.2026

An education report released by the municipality of Amsterdam on April 8, 2026, reveals that primary school students in the city are showing improved reading and math skills, a trend observed across the 327 schools. However, secondary school students are experiencing a decline in reading proficiency, particularly in vmbo and havo programs, mirroring national trends. For the second consecutive year, the teacher shortage in Amsterdam has decreased across all educational levels, though it remains highest in Zuidoost and Nieuw-West, with the most significant deficits in Dutch, mathematics, and English. The report also highlights that girls in secondary education report higher levels of psychological distress and stress related to schoolwork than boys, with 60% of havo/vwo female students feeling stressed and nearly 40% experiencing psychological complaints.
