Battle for the throne: Prince Mbonisi's last-ditch effort against King Misuzulu 22.04.2026

Prince Mbonisi, an uncle to King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, has filed new court papers with the Constitutional Court seeking to overturn its February decision to deny him and 23 other royal family members an opportunity to appeal the king's recognition. Mbonisi argues that the meeting where Misuzulu was identified as king included individuals who were not actual family members, a critical point he wishes to argue, referencing late Inkosi Mangosuthu Buthelezi's role. This latest effort follows the Supreme Court of Appeal's overturning of a Pretoria High Court ruling that had favoured Mbonisi and Prince Simakade's challenge to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s 2022 recognition of Misuzulu. Meanwhile, Prince Simakade has distanced himself from this new application, stating his faction does not accept the Constitutional Court's refusal but is not involved in Mbonisi's current legal strategy.
