Bayeux Tapestry to be moved in secret to British Museum: minister 04.06.2026

France's medieval Bayeux Tapestry, an 11th-century artifact detailing the 1066 Norman conquest of England, will be secretly transported to London for a display at the British Museum beginning in September. French Culture Minister Catherine Pegard confirmed that extensive precautions are being taken, including a specially designed shock-proof container, following a trial run with a dummy tapestry. This loan, agreed to by President Emmanuel Macron to celebrate cross-Channel relations, has raised concerns among some experts about potential damage to the fragile 70-meter embroidery, which already shows signs of wear. The transport is scheduled for a secret date, and upon its return to France at the end of 2027, the tapestry will undergo a previously postponed restoration.
