Belgian university decides against hiring controversial lecturer after Radboud departure 02.03.2026

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) has withdrawn its planned appointment of British lecturer Harry Pettit following controversial social media statements made after the Israeli and American attacks on Iran over the weekend. Pettit, who previously departed Radboud University Nijmegen in November due to similar remarks concerning Israel and Hamas, had his VUB hiring announced on LinkedIn by the Vice-Rector just four days prior. However, the VUB stated that Pettit's recent comments, which described Israel and the United States as the "reincarnation of evil" and referred to the killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as standing up to a "pedophile cabal," incite hatred or violence and violate agreements with the university, leading to the decision not to proceed with his employment.
