Belgium, Israel, and the US clash over a court case concerning circumcision practices 06.05.2026

The Antwerp Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgium has announced its intention to refer two mohels, one of whom is a U.S. citizen, to criminal court for alleged illegal practices, classifying the offenses as "premeditated intentional bodily harm against minors and the unauthorized practice of medicine." This judicial action, stemming from a May 2025 investigation into circumcisions possibly performed by individuals without medical training, has ignited a diplomatic firestorm. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and U.S. Ambassador to Belgium Bill White have condemned the proceedings, accusing Belgium of anti-Semitism and interfering with religious freedom, with White even suggesting the Trump administration condemns the legal action and Belgium's government inaction. Belgian Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prévot has vehemently rejected these criticisms, asserting the independence of the Belgian judiciary and noting that the proceedings were initiated by Jewish community representatives, deeming the accusations "defamatory."
