Bergsteigerin erfroren Prozess um tödliches Bergdrama am Großglockner beginnt 19.02.2026

A trial has commenced at the Innsbruck Regional Court concerning the death of a 33-year-old woman who froze to death approximately 50 meters below the summit of Großglockner in January of the previous year. The 36-year-old male defendant, her climbing partner, is accused of gross negligence leading to death. Despite adverse weather conditions and falling significantly behind schedule, the couple continued their ascent up the Stüdlgrat. The prosecution alleges nine errors, including the victim's inexperience and inappropriate footwear, and that the defendant left her unprotected. Offers of assistance, including a police helicopter and direct communication, were reportedly ignored. The defendant denies wrongdoing, and the victim's mother attributes her daughter's death to a tragic chain of events, though climbing legend Peter Habeler emphasizes the responsibility of more experienced climbers.
