The new artificial turf at the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern will be inaugurated this coming Sunday with the Bernese Cantonal Schwingfest (Swiss wrestling festival) before it is ever used for a football match. To protect the artificial turf, it was first filled with granules and covered with a fleece before sawdust was rolled out and distributed onto the pitch from specially prepared silage bales. This innovative transport and preparation of the sawdust, which is subsequently watered to prevent dust formation, required special care. Surprisingly, 29,000 tickets are already almost sold out, with a significant portion of buyers also being YB fans who appreciate the more relaxed entry rules compared to football matches.
