Bernie Sanders urges Graham Platner to quit Maine Senate race after sex assault allegation 07.07.2026

Senator Bernie Sanders has publicly urged Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner to withdraw from the Maine Senate race following serious sexual assault allegations. A woman accused Platner of forcibly having sex with her nearly five years ago, a claim which he has denied. Sanders, a key national ally, stated he recommended Platner step aside due to the gravity of the accusations. This development comes as Senate Democratic leaders and allied super PACs threaten to withhold investment in Maine, a critical battleground state, if Platner remains on the ballot. With Republicans currently holding a 53-47 Senate majority, Democrats require several key victories to regain control. If Platner exits, he must do so by July 13 to allow for a replacement, with the Maine Democratic Party having until July 27 to select a new nominee.
