Twenty visitors, including two children, were trapped for over five hours in a malfunctioning elevator of the Tokyo Skytree on the evening of February 23, 2026. The elevator stopped unexpectedly at an altitude of approximately 30 meters while descending from the 350-meter observation deck. A dramatic rescue operation, involving police and emergency responders, took place until around 2 AM local time. Rescuers established contact with those trapped and utilized a neighboring elevator, creating a temporary metal bridge between the two cabins to facilitate the safe evacuation of all individuals. The cause of the elevator failure remains undetermined.
