Bipartisan members introduce new bill to protect creators from AI style theft 02.06.2026

A bipartisan coalition of lawmakers has introduced the CREATOR Act (Creative Rights for Artists' Technique and Originality Are Reserved Act) to provide visual artists with legal protections against unauthorized commercial AI-generated imitations of their work. This legislation, introduced on Tuesday by Representatives Beth Van Duyne (R-Texas), Yvette D. Clarke (D-N.Y.), Burgess Owens (R-Utah), and Valerie P. Foushee (D-N.C.), aims to establish a federal standard for protecting an artist's distinctive style, which is not currently covered by copyright laws. The bill allows creators to sue platforms or individuals for intentionally copying their style using AI for commercial gain, while also including provisions to shield AI platforms from liability if they comply with notice and take-down requirements. Adobe is among the supporters, advocating for a clear legal distinction between artistic inspiration and impersonation.
