Bitterer Rückschlag: EU scheitert an Orbán-Blockade – Keine neue Sanktionen und Hilfen zum Jahrestag des Ukraine-Kriegs 24.02.2026

On the fourth anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the European Union has faced a significant setback as it failed to approve new sanctions against Moscow and substantial financial aid for Kyiv. Hungary, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, continues to block these crucial decisions, despite extensive efforts by EU leaders to persuade them otherwise. This impasse undermines the EU's intended strong signal of support to Ukraine and a clear message to Russian President Vladimir Putin about continued European solidarity. While a €100 million emergency aid package for Ukraine's energy infrastructure may still be announced, the larger financial assistance, potentially up to €90 billion by 2027, and new sanctions remain stalled. The situation is expected to overshadow planned commemorations in Kyiv, where EU officials, including Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, are scheduled to attend.
