Board of Peace envoy warns ‘permanent’ Gaza divide under current status quo 21.05.2026

Nickolay Mladenov, the envoy for the US-founded Board of Peace for Gaza, has warned the UN Security Council that the current trajectory in Gaza risks solidifying a "permanent" divide. He presented a roadmap for a permanent ceasefire, urging the UNSC to pressure Hamas to disarm and stressing Israel's obligation to uphold its October ceasefire commitments. Mladenov highlighted that progress cannot solely depend on Palestinian actions, citing continued killings and Israeli restrictions on humanitarian aid as critical issues. He detailed the devastating consequences of inaction, including a divided Gaza under Hamas control, trapped populations dependent on aid, and stalled reconstruction due to ongoing conflict, a scenario he urged all parties to prevent.
