Boar's Head deli meat plant tied to deadly food-poisoning outbreak reopens 05.02.2026

The Boar's Head deli meat plant in Jarratt, Virginia, has resumed limited operations after being shut down for nearly 17 months due to a deadly 2024 listeria outbreak that caused 10 deaths and sickened dozens. The company, which permanently ceased liverwurst production and recalled 7 million pounds of product, claims the facility has been completely rebuilt and extensively tested for contamination, with federal inspectors now on-site. This reopening occurs despite recent inspections of another Boar's Head plant in Petersburg, Virginia, revealing sanitation issues similar to those implicated in the fatal outbreak, including dripping condensation and meat residue. Boar's Head acknowledges these ongoing problems but asserts they are working to eliminate them, maintaining that specific liverwurst equipment, not general unsanitary conditions, caused the initial outbreak.
